A world of experience in a class of its own!

In the German Volcano Museum “Lava Dome” in Mendig in the Eifel region, all questions about volcanism will be answered in a playful way and in a way that is understandable for every layperson.

The three central components of the exhibition include the themed areas: “In the Land of Volcanoes”, “Volcano Workshop” and “Time of Volcanoes”. Hands-on and hands-on: the volcano workshop is particularly popular with younger visitors.

A periscope provides a view into the Mendig underworld, which can also be entered in the flesh after the museum visit: The lava cellar.

30 meters below ground, in the largest underground basalt lava mine in the world, our visitors can immerse themselves in the world of basalt mining. Created by human hands, the lava cellars are now an absolute must-see for visitors to the Volcano Park Region / Laacher See.

The Museumslay, an open-air museum just a few hundred meters from the Lava Dome, offers a journey back in time through the era of the hard work of the Mendig stonemasons.

The Wingertsbergwand, just 2 kilometers away, is also highly recommended. Europe´s most important pumice escarpment is evidence of the eruption of the Laacher See volcano around 13,000 years ago.
