Description [EN]

The Fürstengruft (Prince´s Crypt) built between 1823 and 1828 on the Historic Cemetery is a unique mausoleum. It not only serves as the burial site for the House of Saxe-Weimar and Eisenach. Since 1832, the coffins of the two greatest poets of the Weimar Classicism, Goethe and Schiller, have also been placed in the crypt vault, where they can be viewed alongside those of the ducal family.

You first enter the chapel area through a Doric columned portico, which features neoclassical decorations, the star-crowned dome over the oval floor opening, and preserved inventory pieces from the 1865 renovation. To the left of the entrance, a staircase leads down into the crypt vault with the coffins of the poets and the ducal family. The latter were arranged according to the chronology of their death dates. In total, there were 43 coffins in the crypt, from which ten had to be moved in 1994 for conservation reasons.
