Description [EN]
The former vineyard house in the Park on the Ilm, likely built towards the end of the 16th century, was Johann Wolfgang Goethe´s first personal residence in Weimar. A few months after his arrival in Weimar, he purchased it in 1776 along with the adjoining garden. The financing was undertaken by Duke Carl August of Saxe-Weimar and Eisenach. Until Goethe´s move to Frauenplan in June 1782, the garden house was his main residence and workplace. From here, he worked for the Secret Consilium, the highest government authority in the duchy, as well as for other offices assigned to him. A significant portion of his literary works from this period was created there, including the ballad "Erlkönig" and the poem "To the Moon". Immediately after the purchase, Goethe began repairing the house and redesigning the garden. He developed its typical three-part division, still recognizable today: the park-like slope area behind the house, the light orchard meadow, and the lower garden part where the vegetable beds were located. Besides providing fruit and vegetables for the household, the garden served as a place for social gatherings. After moving to Frauenplan, Goethe only visited the property occasionally. It was not until old age that it became an important retreat for undisturbed work again. In 1830, Goethe initiated the construction of the classical white garden gate and the installation of pebble mosaics in the Pompeian style. After Goethe´s death, the garden house evolved into a pilgrimage site of Goethe worship and was opened as a memorial site in 1886. Since the restoration in 1995/1996, the interior of the house has been restored to the color scheme chosen by Goethe. Tour The tour includes the dining room – the so-called "Erdsälchen" – and the kitchen on the ground floor, as well as four additional rooms on the upper floor, which Goethe used as work and living rooms and as a bedroom. The exhibited furnishings are part of the original inventory and come from all phases of Goethe´s life. These include such rare and original furniture as the standing desk with a chair in the study and the folding bed in the sleeping area. The displayed pictures and objects, as well as the manuscripts, come from Goethe´s estate and refer to the time when he resided here. Also on view is a selection of his drawings, mostly created in the garden house or its immediate vicinity.
