Description [EN]

The Orangerie was built simultaneously with the castle and the original Baroque park, consisting of several buildings and open spaces that were also supplemented later. The Orangerie Courtyard, also known as the Parterre, serves as the display area for the numerous potted plants. It is accessible year-round.

The current ensemble was completed in the mid-18th century. The Orangerie area includes the Gardener´s House, the Orangerie wings, the adjacent New and Long House, as well as the Red Tower. Duke Carl August and Goethe pursued their botanical passion here, acquiring the latest exotic plants of the time from around the world for the plant collection. Belvedere was particularly famous for its collection of so-called Cape plants and New Hollanders, meaning plants from South Africa and Australia. In the "Hortus Belvedereanus," the catalog of the plant collection, approximately 7,900 species and varieties were recorded in 1820.

Hundreds of bitter orange trees were part of the Orangerie´s inventory in its best times. Pomegranates, figs, and coffee trees were also cultivated here. Even the castle founder Ernst August spent large sums on exotic plants and had an Orangerie constructed, representing the significance and wealth of a Baroque court.
