Description [EN]
Friedrich Schiller purchased the house built in 1777, located on today´s Schiller Street, in 1802 for himself and his family. In the residence on the Esplanade, Friedrich Schiller spent his final three years of life and work. Here, the great dramas "The Bride of Messina" and "William Tell" were created, before the poet died in his study in 1805. The original desk and Schiller´s bed can still be seen there today. He had to incur significant debt to raise the required purchase amount. The family lived in the house until the death of Charlotte von Schiller in 1826. In 1847, it came into municipal ownership and was still in that year the first publicly accessible memorial site for a poet in Germany. In 1945, it suffered severe damage due to a bombing raid, but was reopened in 1946.
