The Municipal Wessenberg Gallery emerged from the collection of the last bishop of Constance, Ignaz Heinrich Freiherr von Wessenberg (died 1860). The collection was then continuously expanded through municipal purchases and private donations. The focus of the collection is on south-west German art of the 19th and 20th centuries and the art of the Lake Constance region, and extends right up to the present day. The historical exhibition rooms are used to display the museum´s own holdings and special exhibitions on a rotating basis.
