History of Waldbauernmuseum

The Waldbauern museum arose from the private  collection of Hiltraud and Wilhelm Ast. From 1945 collections were made and brought together, all connected to wood working.

Eventually in 1956 the first exhibition was shown „Holz, Brot der Heimat“.

The collection was limited to various woodworking jobs that didn’t need a  trading certificate in the area around Schneeberg in Lower Austria.

In the summer of 1965 the Waldbauernmuseum opened on this site at the Alter Hofmühle, and was further extended.

In 1967/68 an old sawmill with it’s water wheel was transferred from Oberpiesting.

In 1980 the outbuilding was renovated and the depot was established.

From 1984 to 1986 Wolfgang Lehner renovated the facade and in 2008/09 the shop was installed in the place of the old turbines.

In 1989 the Waldbauernmuseum won second prize in the „österreichischen Museumspreis“ competition.

In 2009, 2015 and again in 2020 the Austrian Museumsgütesiegel was awarded to the Waldbauernmuseum.
